Phlegeton

July 24, 2012 by Tessie van Hintum

Phlegethon-Still-10
Story about one’s way to Phlegethon – a river of boiling blood in seventh circle of Inferno, where murderers of different ages serve time.

“The name of the film comes from the Danteʼs “Divine Comedy”, itʼs the name of the river. So as I said before, this was my school project where we had to come up with the idea for dialog-free film. I started to think about how to create the situation where dialog is unnecessary. It couldnʼt be just one person. So I was thinking about a place where people donʼt speak to each other and for some reason the first place I could think of was the Hell. I imagine people donʼt speak in hell. That made me think of Danteʼs “Divine Comedy”, where especially seventh circle of hell is described very beautifully. The atmosphere of this place was very interesting and I wanted to come up with the modern version of this episode, to find a new way of telling the same story but in todayʼs
world.
